“Honestly? Kinda sucks. No one believes me, and she’s not exactly a fun person to be anyway. Not sure getting all her money would be worth it if it means sitting around reading books all day. That kinda life just ain’t for me, you know?”

“Anyway, you buckled in?” she asked once Cake had climbed in. “Do these things even have buckles? Eh, it oughta be fine, you got built-in airbags. Let’s go!”

Zarmilla hit the accelerator and the go-kart zoomed off at a speed far beyond what would be considered safe. Her hair whipped behind her as she drifted into the first turn, a manic grin on her face. The kart let out a metallic shriek as if begging for mercy.

"No fun allowed, got it," Cake saluted before climbing in. "...How's it feel, anyway? The whole becoming Carmilla thing?"

“I mean your usual brand of weird, where you make things sound more intimate than they need to be,” Zarmilla replied, revving the accelerator. “Whatever, just get in quick if you’re gonna. I’m about ready to leave you in the dust.”

"Weird how?" Cake asked, pushing herself upright again.

“Not exactly anywhere to go on this ship,” Zarmilla replied, shrugging. “But if you’re brave enough to take a few laps on the track with me you’ll get the adrenaline rush of a lifetime...long as you don’t make it weird.”

“Nah, that was kind of a one-time thing,” Zarmilla explained, drumming her fingers on the steering wheel. “And I more just stumbled into it, really. It’s not even that I’m too interested in becoming some big identity thief. It’s just I’ve been stuck in the slammer as Carmilla for so long, it’s hard to even be sure who I am anymore...”

"Ooh, a drive sounds nice," Cake cooed. "Is that an invite?"

She chuckled and leaned against the kart. "So is that the kinda thing you've done before, then? Even making yourself up to have the same face and everything?"

Zarmilla hurled herself into the drivers’ seat and started fiddling with the steering wheel.

“Now that’s a long story,” she replied, “Might be perfect for a leisurely drive through the countryside. Not so much a for tearing down a go-kart track.”

“The point is that, no...she ain’t never met me before, and I ain’t met her. This gist is that I was meant to take her place at the company for a special job, but then I wound up behind bars. Then I decided I’d be better off keeping up the act, though I guess I wasn’t much good at it. We’ll just call it a learning experience!”

"Sure did. Nobody else has the right, you know?" Cake smirked.

She walked over to the flaming kart and eyed it. "Oh, speaking of names... usually I keep my nose outta stuff like this, but I gotta know; what's the deal with you and Carm, anyway? She doesn't seem to have any idea who you are..."

“I’ll admit that ain’t much of a surprise, but who gave it to you then? Yourself? Just outta curiosity,” Zarmilla asked.

At Cake’s suggestion, Zarmilla’s face lit up with a bit of excitement.

“Sure, why not. I ain’t doing anything else right now. You’d best pick your cart wisely though, cause they each got their special stats.”

She gestured at a cart nearby which was painted in epic flames.

“I like this one here. It’s the fastest of the bunch!”

"Long as you're happy going by it," Cake shrugged. "Not like my folks named me 'Cake'," she added with a chuckle.

She paced halfway around the kart, then inclined her head at Zarmilla. "Wanna get a couple of these running and go for a ride?"

“Zarm’s fine, I suppose,” Zarmilla replied, scratching her head. “Not like going by the other name’s ever done me much good, and I ain’t interested in giving out my original name.”

Zarmilla stepped over to the cart and ran her fingers across its paint job.

“A bit, I suppose,” she replied, “I took a passing interest in mechanics since my dad totaled his truck so many times. Could probably help put one of these together, but I ain’t what you’d call a safe driver either...”

If Cake noticed any hostility from the other girl, she didn't show it; she greeted Zarmilla with a friendly wave. "Hey there, Carm... Zarm... uh, what do you wanna go by, anyway?"

She glanced back at the kart she'd been inspecting. "Just checking this out, really. You know a lot about them? Sounds like ya do."

Zarmilla, who was actually driving a go-kart at the time, pulled off a sick skid around a corner before screeching to a stop at the finish line. She noticed Cake as she exited the car and eyed her with a look somewhere between curiosity and contempt, but eventually decided to approach her.

“And what do you suppose you’re doing over here?” she asked, “These things really ain’t much harder to operate than a bumper car...unless you’re thinking about modifying one.”

Sometime between arriving at the lower deck and the spy game (because things would be weird and complicated otherwise), Cake found herself at the garage by herself, checking out the go-karts and their parts. She didn't really look like she knew what she was doing.
